About Traveler

Carol Grandy: Vocals

Dave White: Guitar and Vocals

Dave began playing guitar in 6 th grade, taking lessons and playing with friends. He was a member of several high school bands (well, more or less the same band really) with names such as "Us", and "Tropoz". Song lists were heavy with the Rolling Stones and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

In college at UNH, Dave's guitar playing was limited to an occasional bit of folk music at a Coffee House (ask him sometime about singing with an actual von Trapp grand daughter). After graduating in 1986, the pieces that would become Traveler began to coalesce, and after sorting out the lineup, Traveler became Dave's creative outlet.

Never happy with his playing ability, Dave was very thankful that for the most part he rose to the challenge when playing live. Some of his best playing occurred when it mattered most. If you listen to the various songs on the site you can see ample evidence of this when comparing early practice tape recordings with our final live gig.

Since the band broke up in the early 90s, Dave has played very little until recently. He has begun to play acoustic with two co-workers - Jeff McGlashan and Brian Kennedy - on some of Jeff's material, and is looking forward to reuniting with other members of Traveler shortly to perhaps embarrass themselves and their children on a stage near you in the summer of 2010...

John Davis: Keyboards and Vocals

John discovered the synthesizer in 1969 while listening to one of his brother's Emerson, Lake and Palmer albums. Unable to afford a synthesizer (or as a six year old really even understand what one was) he set the idea aside and got on with playing outside.

John got his official musical start playing tuba in the Kearsarge Middle School band where he learned to read music and play well with others. That's also how he met Wayne and Dave, sitting in the back with the low-brass guys. Meanwhile he tried many things including the violin and cello. Nothing stuck but he continued playing tuba through high school. He also banged away on his dad's piano, plinking out Bach, Mozart and Beethoven pieces with more enthusiasm than skill.

As a teenager those memories of Keith Emerson's crazy noises re-emerged and he broke out that old album (his brother gave it to him when he wore it out) and gave it another listen. He was hooked. He had to get one of those things. In the Army, John found himself with enough disposable income to actually buy a synthesizer which he did and set about learning all about how it worked and how to play it. John came back from Europe in 1986 with a couple keyboards, a little bit of ability and a strong desire to do something with them. When the chance to form a band came up he immediately jumped at it. The rest, as they say, is history.

John still plays keyboards and composes in his spare time and even now, all these years later, occasionally plays the 'Lucky Man' solo when he thinks nobody is listening.
